Not that its much of a surprise, but Microsoft announced today in a blog post the successor to Windows 7 will be called Windows 8. Hooray for naming consistency! What is surprising is that they finally got some sense knocked into them and got rid of the many confusing iterations of Windows and have gotten back to basics. Just like Windows XP, there are two flavors for consumers, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro which will still come with 32bit or 64bit flavors. There will also be an Enterprise version that’s basically Pro for large customers. New to the game is another version being called Windows RT, which is the ARM processor equivalent for Tablets. Looking down the list of features, RT will interestingly include the crown Office jewels of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote. No need for a separate app install and purchase? That’s a surprising move!
